Voters on Southern Living's Facebook page were recently asked to name their favorite college town. The magazine's fans listed 90 communities, including Auburn, Ala., Charlottesville, Va., Morgantown, W.Va., and Tallahassee, Fla. Blacksburg won easily with more than 4,300 votes, beating out Tuscaloosa, Ala., home of the Crimson Tide, by about 1,000 votes.
Bloomburg Businessweek named Blacksburg as its "Best Place in the U.S. to Raise Kids." The magazine's staff picked Blacksburg from a list of 4,169 communities chosen for their low crime rate and median family income. That list was narrowed using each place's schools, economic factors, amenities, air quality, and ethnic diversity.
